About This Blog

Hello!! 
My name is Shellie Downie and I am a pre-med hopeful who is officially one year into a merciless Biochemistry major. In order to get some hands on experience in my field of interest while still being able to spend time in Israel, a country which I hold close to my heart, I will be spending 6 weeks as a volunteer EMT in Holon, Israel. 
This entire journey was made possible because of the donations made by my incredible friends and family, as well as an excellent scholarship provided by the Jewish Federation of Central New York. Thank you again to those who supported me, you know who you are and I've started this blog especially for you!
Read along as I experience Israel in a new light. I will post updates on my adventures as I go, so please feel free to comment and share.

Learning!

I wanted to write this blog because of one particular shift I recently had that I really enjoyed. Let me give you some background information before I continue. At the end of every call, we have to fill out a MDA form which includes what happened during the call, what condition the patient was found in, the patient's vital signs, etc. Throughout my time in MDA, I have learned and perfected how to fill out every single part of this form except for the part where we have to write out exactly what happened during the call in a rather lengthy paragraph. Of course, this paragraph must be done in Hebrew and since I write at the pace of a third grader and make lots of mistakes, it never made sense to have me to write it instead of the driver or other volunteers. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

I finally did it, I got to do CPR!!  I know the fact that I am so excited about this probably makes me sound like a psychopath, but this is one of those things that I was not willing to leave MDA without experiencing. Anybody who wants to go into medicine understands this feeling, this drive to go to such extremes to try and save a life. The types of people who embrace all parts of the field, both the beautiful and the ugly, are the types of people that make it in the end. Don't get me wrong, I am not by any means saying that I am some sort of prodigy who is going to be the best doctor and who has her whole life figured out, that is the farthest thing from the truth. Change of plans

Remeber when I said I wasn't ready to leave Israel? Well surprise surprise... I have selfishly decided to add an entire extra month to my trip. Of course, it was a very difficult decision between going home to be with my family and staying here to continue with MDA. I went back and forth  a lot before officially changing my ticket because I did not want to disappoint anybody by not being home all summer, especially since I am already away at school for most of the year. I am bummed that I am missing out on the much anticipated family road trips, late night hot tub talks with my pals, and early morning walks around Green Lakes... but if I were to have passed up this perfect opportunity to stay in Israel I don't think I would have ever forgiven myself.
